April 2010: Lafayette Teachers Awarded Grants
Trustees Ed Mueller and John Kelly of the Lafayette Education Advancement Foundation recently presented grant awards to several faculty members of the Lafayette Township School. Alice Sensale was presented with two grants; the first was for $450 to develop a "Hunger Simulation" for seventh and eighth grade students The tremendously successful interactive "Hunger Simulation" forced students to think about challenges faced by others within Sussex County and throughout the world by dividing them into groups of first, second and third world citizens, who then had to cope with their varying abilities to purchase food. Sensale also was awarded a $200 grant to develop a "Mystery Festival" for students in second and third grade. The project will be developed and led by gifted and talented students from her fifth and sixth grade classes.
A $1250 grant was awarded to Patti Erhardt in order to assist struggling readers. Ehrhardt used the grant to purchase iPods and audio books for students in her middle school classes.
Jason Graf was awarded $5,086.95 in order to integrate music composition software programs into the schools music curriculum. The grant has already been used to purchase five MacBook laptops and music software for students.
